How to Convert AVI to WMV

Microsoft introduced the AVI and WMV formats in 1990s and since then both the formats have become the main components for computers all over the world.
Audio Video Interleave (AVI) is a format technically known as container format and was introduced in 1992. Being a container format, AVI contains both audio and video along with synchronous playback. You can find AVI files extensively on Internet as music files, full length movies, television programs and streaming videos.
On the other side, Windows Media Video (WMV) was introduced by the Microsoft particularly for streaming. Still, you can save the WMV files to your hard drive and disk media for playback with Windows Media Player or many other types of players such as DivX, Winamp, VLC player etc.
The popularity of these formats can be defined in two points.
- The first is that they can easily be played media players such as Windows Media Player, which is available in almost all Windows operating systems.
- The second reason behind their popularity is that these formats can easily be compressed, downloaded, uploaded or streamed through the Internet.
You can easily convert the AVI file to WMV with the use of appropriate conversion software.

Steps
- First you need to install the conversion software on your system. If you don’t have any conversion software, you can download one from the Internet.
- Conversion software normally allows you to choose what sort of conversion you need, i.e. from AVI to WMV or from WMV to AVI. You need to convert AVI to WMV in this case.
- The next step is to choose the AVI file that you want to convert to WMV format.
- You can also drag and drop the source file into the application window with many conversion programs. Save the destination file into a specific folder.
- Once the selections have made, you can click on the ‘Start’ or ‘Convert’ button to begin the conversion process. Remember, the conversion process may take from one minute to several minutes depending on the size of the file.
- Most of the converter programs prompt you, when the process is finished. Always play the converted file to make certain that the file is converted correctly.
Tips & Warnings
- It is important to choose the correct audio and video codec, i.e. WMA for audio and WMV 8/9 for the video.
- Always select the original video size.
- Selection of bit rate is also important. Minimum of 128 Kbit/s for audio and 768 Kbit/s for video is ideal. Frames per second should be the same as that of source file.
