The difference between xlsx files and xls is that former is created using MS Office 2007 and later one is created on MS Office 2000 or 2003. You cannot open the xlsx file, if you are having older version of MS Office running on your system.
If you want to convert your xlsx files to xls format, you need to follow the following procedure so that you can able to open and edit the xls spreadsheet in your older version of MS Office pack.
Instructions:
- First you need to download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Excel 2007. You can download it from Microsoft’s website. A file named ‘FileFormatConverters.exe’ will be downloaded on your system. Open the file and accept the license agreement in order to start the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, run the file that you want to convert or simply right click on the file and select ‘Open with’ à ‘Microsoft Open XML Converter’. Specify the filename and press ‘Save’ button.
- The conversion process starts and the converted file will be saved in the specified folder.
- You can now easily open the xls file in your Microsoft Excel 2000/2003 version.
